AI is beginning to change not only how people search the web, but how they interact with websites. We’ve discussed AI agents and optimising websites for agentic AI. WebMCP is another development in this area, designed to make it easier for AI agents to understand what they can actually do on a website.

So, what is WebMCP, how does it work, and could it become an important consideration for web developers and businesses?
WebMCP stands for Web Model Context Protocol. In simple terms, it is a proposed web standard that allows websites to expose certain functionality to AI agents as structured tools. At present, an AI agent interacting with a website may need to interpret the page much like a person would. It identifies buttons, forms, navigation and other elements before attempting to work out what it needs to click or complete. WebMCP proposes a more structured approach. Instead of making an AI agent work everything out for itself, a website can explicitly describe actions that are available and the information required to perform them.
Think of it as the website saying:
“Here are the things you can do, here is what each one does, and here is the information you need to use it.”
The possibilities will depend heavily on the website. An e-commerce website might expose tools for searching products or adding something to a basket. A booking website could provide an agent with a structured way to search availability or complete a booking process. A business website could potentially expose actions relating to enquiries, searches, calculators or other interactive functionality.
For example, imagine asking an AI assistant:
“Find a suitable appointment next Tuesday afternoon and book it for me.”
Rather than the agent attempting to navigate the website by interpreting buttons and form fields, WebMCP could provide a defined tool for completing that particular task. The website remains responsible for defining what functionality is available.
For web developers, the interesting part of WebMCP is reliability. Modern websites have traditionally been designed primarily for human interaction. We create navigation, buttons, forms and visual cues that help people understand what to do next. AI agents introduce another type of visitor. An agent can attempt to interpret the same interface, but there is always scope for misunderstanding. Giving an agent a structured description of available functionality could make those interactions more predictable and efficient. This potentially gives us another consideration when building websites: not simply whether a page can be read by AI, but whether certain website functions can be safely and reliably used by AI too.
This is where WebMCP becomes particularly interesting. Optimising for agentic AI isn’t necessarily the same thing as traditional SEO. SEO is primarily concerned with helping search engines discover, understand and rank information. Agentic optimisation goes a step further because an AI agent may want to perform an action rather than simply retrieve information. That could mean searching, filtering, booking, purchasing, submitting or interacting with a website in some other way. WebMCP is an early attempt to create a common framework for those interactions.
Right now? Probably not. WebMCP is still experimental and the specification continues to evolve. It would be premature for most small businesses to start rebuilding websites around it. However, we do think it’s worth watching. The wider direction of travel is interesting. Websites have evolved from documents, to interactive applications, to platforms optimised for search engines and mobile devices. We may now be entering another phase where websites also need to consider AI agents as genuine users. For businesses commissioning websites today, the fundamentals remain much the same: build something fast, accessible, well structured and genuinely useful. Those principles should put you in a much better position to adapt as technologies such as WebMCP develop.
